Welcome to the Collective Spaces Farm, Friends!

We are a cooperative farm community and land stewardship group that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the land while creating a vibrant and inclusive community where we can grow, learn, live, play, and thrive together.

As farmers who are also stewards of the land, we believe that we are responsible for the care and management of the land, including preserving natural resources, promoting sustainable practices, and protecting the environment. All of this is done in the spirit of bringing responsible Agritourism into the southern Virginia area and to provide opportunities for land ownership, farming, education, and community building to residents in the Halifax County area and beyond.

Our goal is to step outside the traditional role of farmers while also respecting the deep traditions within farming communities throughout time.  We open ownership of the land as well as our farming community to individuals and families who share our belief in and desire to break down class barriers, support one another, and have a positive impact in our communities - this includes our Collective Spaces farming community, the larger South Boston and Halifax County community, and the respective communities the individual Members and Participants are members of.

Support from Runic Roast Coffee

Your morning cup can help grow our fields, trails, and community programs. Runic Roast Coffee donates 50¢ from every bag sold to support our farm’s ongoing projects - from habitat restoration and trail building to art-and-education events for the community.

Runic Roast Coffee roasts to order for peak freshness and consistency, with offerings like Highpass Colombian (dried orange, berry, chocolate) and Forge-Fire Dark Roast (baker’s chocolate, orange peel, juniper, molasses). Beans are available whole or ground to your brew method, so it’s easy to find your perfect cup.

What we love about this partnership:

  • Simple, steady impact: every bag sends 50¢ to the farm - no promo codes, no hoops, just good coffee doing good work.
  • Fresh, small-batch roasting: beans are roasted throughout the week so your coffee lands bright and flavorful.
  • Inclusive values: Runic Roast is openly always inclusive - supporting a kinder, more welcoming community alongside great coffee.
  • Adventure-ready lineup: from smooth everyday blends to deeper, darker cups, there’s a roast for every palate.

We Bought a Baumalight MP360!

We are seeing a lot of traction on the farm and bought a Baumalight MP360 Forestry Mulcher to help clear space for William's Peony Farm plot that is going in this year.  We will soon have flowers!

Monthly Support

Our current level of monthly support from the community.  This will go towards monthly loan payments, insurance, and other maintenance fees for farm and community needs.

We Bought a Tractor for the Farm!

We are starting to do more serious work on the farm and recently purchased our first tractor - A Kubota MX5400.

One thing we know is that tractors and other equipment cost money and this is where you can help!  Please support us by becoming a supporter through Buy Me a Coffee, which lets you donate on a monthly basis.  This greatly helps cover the costs of the tractor loan as well as maintenance.

We are just getting started with the farm, and here is where we are with our production schedule:

  • We have several hundred Plum trees in our orchards and host an annual plum picking event for the community in June.
  • We are clearing space for a Peony field near the front of the farm (see above for the most recent update here).
  • We planted several small orchards over the past few years that include peaches, mulberries, and figs - these will eventually be part of our Food Forest orchard for the wider community.
  • We have three large stands of Pine in various stages of growth - these are available as Christmas trees to the community during our annual cut your own Christmas tree event.

We are excited to have you join us on this journey. You can find Collective Spaces online on our Discord server and in our shared Google Drive, where we are planning, dreaming, prioritizing, and building the systems that will help us achieve our goals. We also hold monthly camping weekends and other events where we get together to enjoy the land, clear timber, create camping spots and hiking trails, and build basic infrastructure.

We use the governance model of sociocracy to make decisions as a group. Sociocracy emphasizes collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement. Click here to learn more about our organizational structure and governance.

If you're interested in joining us, we'd love to have you be a part of this wonderful farming community. Come join us and see what Collective Spaces Farm is all about!
