Collective Spaces Farm is more than 200 acres of orchards, flowers, forest, fields, and unfinished possibility in Halifax County, Virginia. We are farming and caring for this land now while building a community capable of sustaining it over time.
Some of the edges are already painted in: the farm itself, the neighboring community, the orchards and flower fields and timber stands, the roads and water, and the commitments we have made to shared ownership and collective decision-making. Much of the land is still open and has yet to be painted in. The people who enter into relationship with this place will help decide what belongs there.
Farming is the center of what we do. Our current work includes perennial fruit and flowers, silviculture, land restoration, and member-led agriculture. Agritourism, camping, art, education, and community gatherings support the farm and allow us the time and space to engage with the land sustainably.
We are looking for more owners who want a real relationship with the farm and the land. Some help sustain it financially, some build, steward, govern, farm, or spend time here, and some do several of those things. The easiest first step is to join one of our Monday evening meetings.
We Bought a Tractor for the Farm!
We are starting to do more serious work on the farm and purchased our first tractor in 2024 - A Kubota MX5400.
One thing we know is that tractors and other equipment cost money and this is where you can help! This greatly helps cover the costs of the tractor loan as well as much needed maintenance while our primary member led resources go directly into the farm.

Farming at Collective Spaces
Most of the farming described here is Collective Spaces Farm's own work, not a collection of separate businesses. Collective Spaces owns the land and common infrastructure and directly manages much of the farm's tree, flower, field, and forest work. Members may also develop agricultural businesses within areas and boundaries we agree on together.
- Silviculture: Collective Spaces directly manages three stands of young pine timber and 84 acres of older-growth hardwood and mixed forest.
- Perennial food crops: Collective Spaces directly manages a peach stand, three separate plum stands with several hundred trees in total, and plantings of figs, pawpaws, and mulberries.
- Flowers: Collective Spaces has roughly 600 irises across the front of the farm. We also host our first member-led agricultural business operating within Collective Spaces Farm on Collective Spaces-owned land, with a field of 100 peonies.
- Field and land management: a farm tractor and forestry mulcher support production-area preparation, mowing, access, soil restoration, and ongoing woodland and field work.
Our next farm stages include planning a publicly accessible food forest, improving irrigation and rainwater systems, adding bees, and developing value-added agricultural enterprises. Those are active directions we are building toward, not finished operations. This is where you, as a potential new member, can directly help see your vision come to life.
We use sociocracy for major shared land-use and governance decisions. Within those shared agreements, members have meaningful independence to shape and lead their projects. Learn about our governance or explore ownership.
